If you hate poetry, well you won't appreciate this, but if you've ever lived without modern appliances, and then come back to them, you'll understand. I have had a month of grand appreciation and decided to write my own Ode...

"Ode to Appliances: Buttons of Ease"

With the ease of buttons all quarters are lost.

And with them too thoughts of dedication:

The days which suited best for washing and drying,

The time which suited best for function or applying.

Each machine open, available for use;

no driving, no parking, no waiting, no fuss.

More chores can be done with hours in the bank,

More tasks completed with gas in the tank.

All the gadgets, all the buttons, levers and knobs.

All unpleasantries drain to hide-away worlds.

No hoses, nor gloves the black plague is all done.

No connections, nor clogs, nor lines to be run.

The water stays hot-- an endless stream of pressure.

A fountain of youth, making a shower time for confession.

Moving on to the kitchen with bountiful options;

Julienne, mince, or ribbon, food's artistry in creation.

Like an extra closet, dirty dishes have their own cave;

Out of sight, out of mind, one moves to greater ground.

Covering carpet with suction that cleans as it moves;

There's no stopping the path that modernity grooves.

Although one thing is missing with each multi-task:

Taking credit, which only the function is due.

Hubris reaches it's victim with every box checked.

And every subtle shift adjusts gratitude's effect.

Before long expectation inserts its fangs into the productive victim,

Assumption follows closely, leaving a bad taste in the mouth.

Anything that slows progress or requires great effort,

This unacceptable trait will be extinguished forever.

Beware of great advancement, which slows primordial wisdom.

Be not for worse in the presence of such talented appliances.

Marry logic and prudence with your native wit.

Pursue perseverance with every uncomfortable fit.

But for now like a little child--enjoy those invented buttons of ease.

Press them as much or as little, as long as you please!
