The Sojourner's Song

I don't know where we're going.

I don't know when we'll arrive.

I look for ways to finish.

Because I hate the partially done.

If I can't see the end,

Then I'd rather not start.

We started with no result in view.

We left everything, just halfway thought through.

But now I know we'll never get there.

It'll never be complete.

I won't get to where I'm going

because my going was the point.

If we mark it off, and call it a win.

We shift the focus back to us.

Then we realize, we're the same as when we left.

If I don't know where I'm going, but I know my final place,

Then I'll keep sojourning. I'll never stop.

No matter how unfinished, I'll shine His light in every space.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "If we answer the call to discipleship, where will it lead us? What decisions and partings will it demand? To answer this question we shall have to go to him, for only he knows the answer. Only Jesus Christ, who bids us follow him, knows the journey's end. But we do know that it will be a road of boundless mercy." (The Cost of Discipleship)
